Dermatitis

Dermatitis is a blanket term meaning 'inflammation of the skin'. For example a rash. Eczema is the same and many people use the term 'eczema' for specific types of dermatitis, such as atopic dermatitis in children. There are several different types of dermatitis. What these usually have in common is the allergic reaction to specific allergens (an allergen is something that causes an allergic reaction). As with eczema, dermatitis is caused by an allergic reaction or irritating chemicals. The skin becomes red, swollen or blistered, and intensely itchy. The term may be used to refer to eczema, which is also known as dermatitis eczema.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is inflammation of the skin due to direct contact with a particular substance, either by a chemical or an allergen. For example -detergents, bleach, acids, hair dyes, jewellery, oils and skin cleansers, fragrant and coloured soap.

  • house dust mites and grass pollens

Aloe vera and eczema

Aloe vera is one of the oldest plants known to possess healing powers. Aloe Vera has the ability to form a thin layer of gum resin on the skin, which relieves inflammation and reduces the possibility of infection. Aloe vera also contains lignins which help penetrate deep into your skin and moisturise the inner tissues. Aloe Vera can help heal eczema by relieving pain and discomfort. The reason that it is excellent at relieving pain and itching is that it contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid is the same pain relieving agent found in certain commercial pain medications including aspirin. Aloe vera is a natural anti-inflammatory which helps reduce redness and itching. Aloe vera also helps speed up the healing process and reduce scarring. Aloe Vera has the ability to penetrate to the inner layers of the skin, supplying moisture directly to the underlying tissue.
